Introduction

Since the beginning of its activity, Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi has pointed out to the need to determine appropriate guidelines for the conservation of historic stained glass. In 1982, the International Committee for the Conservation and Restoration of Stained Glass was established at Corpus Vitrearum (CV). Thanks to several dozen years of experience in the conservation and restoration practices as well as research carried out in the CV member countries, the basic recommendations have been drawn up and published as the "Guidelines for the Conservation and Restoration of Stained Glass" (Nuremberg 2004).

The goal of CV Poland is the protection of historic stained glass in its broadest sense. The present section of the website presents a variety of solutions used in our country in accordance with international guidelines. The examination conducted during the conservation treatment of the most valuable objects such as medieval stained glass in Cracow, Toruń and Włocławek, as well as the 19th- and 20th-century stained glass windows is presented here as examples of good practices in the conservation and restoration of historic stained glass, and answers also to numerous questions and problems regarding the preservation and display of stained glass in situ or in museums. It also provides guidelines for the proper transportation and storage of stained glass. The present site is intended to spread knowledge on the research of Polish and foreign conservators of historic stained glass.
